CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of The Study
Most people define language as all the words
and sentence we use as we talk with another. English is an international
language. Language as a means of communication is a fact of human existence and
social process. Or some might say that language is used as we communicate
verbally with one another, including writing as we as speaking in the
definition.
In Indonesia English has been determine as a
part of curriculum in schools and university of be taught to the students.
According to the statement in Webster's
Third New International Dictionary, "Language is audible, articulate human
speech as producedby the action of the tongue and adjacent vocal organ”.(Depdikbud, 1985 : 97 ). A second statement describes
language as any means, vocal or other of expressing or
communicating to human activity and to vocal sound.

language, with meanings or translations into another language; glossary English. Vocabulary is one of the most important things that should be
mastered in order to speak English.
As we know that English is one of the important' role to the
students_ English is learned by srudents at Junior High School, Senior High
School and University and also some English course, so English is not strange
word for students, the status of English in Indonesia is the first foreign
language which should be learned. To learn the foreign language there are some
process, related students and teachers faced in teaching learning process,
related to the limited vocabulary. Vocabulary is one of the lesson in the level
from primary school until University.
There are many methods of teaching vocabulary such as showing
object, pictures, matching word with the definition, mapping technique and
games. The way for studying vocabulary to became easy, have fun and enjoyable
is the teacher must have a various technique in teaching ieaming process. In
teaching English the teacher must have interesting techniques and methods that
can make the students easily to master and motivate the students in leaming
vocabulary deeply. The teacher plays great role in transfering knowledge and
educating students. The methods are that the teacher used in teaching has a
great impact on the students motivation and their achievement in learning of
the influence things. The reason of the reseacher choose this tittle is make
students have fun and easier to master vocabulary and pronounce them better,
and playing a game can increase their interest to know many methods.
With regard to this, after doing an observation on the
teaching and learning vocabulary to the students and it is problem.
The researcher has found some common problems in mastering
vocabulary faced by the students as follows :
1.
Students only think of vocabulary
learn as knowing the meaning of new words. Students usually only acquire new
vocabulary through new words in their text book or when they are given by
teachers during classroom lesson. For example, learners find many new words in
a text ask the teacher to explains their meanings and usage.
2.
They have many difficulties to master
the vocabulary verbally by the teacher because the material do not motivated
the students.
3.
The technique or method of teaching
that teacher used in presenting the material make students do not and even feel
bored when faced in lesson.
Based on this, it can infered that is important to reduce tha
students difficulties in mastering vocabulary. So using mapping in hyponym has
been shown brings in relaxation and fun for students, thus it help the learners
in relating new words with their sentence easely. From the explanation above,
it is clear vocabulary is a main part - of communication. That is why using
mapping technique in hyponym is very important to be discussed in order to help
students to increase their vocabulary.
The way that used by teacher also is chain spelling game, it
is so easy for them when the teacher teach vocabulary. The students are able to
express them selves in the language and other people can also understand them.
students can increasing vocabularies by listening, speaking, and writing
skills_ Many problems are faced in practicing them. learning vocabulary by
using games can be as a greater change of motivating student's ability in
incraesing vocabulary: And chain. spelling games as part of the games can be
used in the learning process. It can motivate and encourage the student's
interest increasing their vocabulary.
The chain spelling will give the advantages : the students
can study vocabulary happily. They are not getting bored in studying it, they
can memorize all of the new words more easily and they can play and study in
the class. The students will not have the trouble n communicating with others
especially and speaking.
1.2. Identification of The Problem
The research is identified as follows:

The effect of using mapping and chain
spelling game on the student's ability to build up simple sentence in
vocabulary.
2.
The students difficulties of using
mapping and chain spelling game taught by using grammar translation method in
increasing vocabulary .
1.3. Limitation
The scope of the study is applied mapping
technique and chain spelling game to increase student's vocabulary. But, in
this case, mapping is limited into hyponym. The limitation is only about the
effect of using mapping technique and chain spelling game on the student's
ability to the first year students' of SMP SWASTA TAMAN HARAPAN 2010/2011
1.4. Formulation of
The Problem
The problems was formulated as follwos :
a.
Is there any
significant effect of using mapping technique and chain spelling games on the
student's ability in increasing vocabulary ?
b.
Which one is the higher,
the student's ability taught by using mapping and chain spelling games or the
student's ability taught by using grammar translation method in increasing
vocabulary.
1.5. Objectives of
The Study
The reseach intent to describe that chain
spelling games and mapping technique can increase students vocabulary.it
is expect that students was greatly motivated and encourage to -keep in
learning vocabulary.:

To investigate the
effect of using chain spelling games and mapping technique on the student's
ability to build up simple sentence
2.
To find out the
student's difficulties of using chain spelling games and mapping technique in
learning vocabulary
1.6. Significance of The Study
The finding of this research was expected to be usedful for
English teacher as their consideration in choosing the methods in teaching
vocabulary and this research is useful for the students in inviting their high
motivation to master, many vocabularies as possible.
And also mapping technique particularly in hyponym are really
important for researches, learners, and teachers, especially for English
teachers, because they can provide information about what material sholud be
taught and what material sholud be remedied.
The fact that teachers know will about the students
vocabulary enable then to obtain a valuable feedback from their students on the
teaching and it can be used as means of diagnosing for students in increasing
their vocabulary enable them to communicate. The findings of this research are expected
that:

To be useful for the English teachers
as their input in presenting the material especially vocabulary in reading
text. It is also as the information to teachers about the description of
student's ability in vocabulary in reading test.
2.
Students will find a new atmosphere
or teaching leaning activitty so it is expected that the students will be
motivated to study vocabulary.
It is as the information to society about the student's
ability in vocabulary by using mapping technique
